13 HKDSE subjects · 12 IB assessments · marked by the official criteria

Get your time back
for teaching.

A whole class in about 20 minutes. Every answer is scored item by item against the official criteria, with an evidence quote that is checked against the student's transcript. You review only the handful that are uncertain; the rest are filed by the criteria. HKDSE and IB both covered. Students still write on paper.

Calibrated on 1,000+ official past papers and marking schemes, with an evidence quote and confidence for every mark; the teacher decides.

Students write on paper as always; how you set and invigilate the exam stays the same. The official criteria are built in. You drop a whole class of scripts into the room. School standards are optional.

Excel · PDF · CSV

Mark a whole class, not one script.

From bulk upload and evidence-backed scoring to the review queue and export, every step follows how teachers actually mark.

Whole-class upload

Upload a whole class at once — one file per student, multi-select — so you never open files one by one.

Evidence for every mark

For each rule in the criteria: met or not, which line is the evidence, and how confident. Checkable, not a guess.

Official criteria built in

25 assessments across HKDSE and IB, built from official past papers and marking criteria. Nothing to upload.

School standards (optional)

Upload your school’s own standards and, wherever they differ, they take precedence over the official criteria. Not required.

Review queue

Only low-confidence, borderline or hard-to-read scripts reach you; the rest are filed by the criteria. You see only the exceptions.

Grades, evidence & review list

Per-item scores, evidence quotes and the review list, exported to Excel/CSV/JSON, with printable per-student and class reports.

Marked by the criteria:
evidence for every point.

For every rule in the marking criteria, it shows met-or-not, which line is the evidence, and how confident it is. What you get is a checkable marking record, not just a number.

  • Rule-by-rule check: every rule marked “met” or “not met”.
  • Quotes the student’s own words: each mark points to a line in the script.
  • Carries a confidence value: low-confidence marks go to review instead of being guessed.

Safe scripts are filed by the criteria. Only the low-confidence, borderline, or hard-to-read ones form a queue and reach you. When it isn’t sure, it doesn’t award a mark on its own.

  • Accept: filed directly, ready to export.
  • Needs review: low confidence or borderline, for a second look.
  • Reading issue: handwriting or a figure unclear, so you confirm first.

What is Criteva?

Criteva is a marking platform for Hong Kong secondary teachers. The official marking criteria for 13 HKDSE subjects and 12 IB assessments are built in. You upload the student scripts and each answer is scored item by item against the criteria, with a verbatim evidence quote and a confidence value for every mark. Scripts that need a second look are collected into a review queue for you. Calibrated on 1,000+ official past papers and marking schemes; accuracy validation is staged, with English writing benchmarked against the HKEAA public exemplar ladder and other subjects being validated against public exemplars; about 20–40 seconds per script, roughly 20 minutes for a class.

Which subjects?

Both. HKDSE (13 subjects): Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Citizenship & Social Development, plus Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Geography, History, BAFS, Chinese History and Mathematics (Extended Part M1). IB (12 assessments): Extended Essay, TOK Essay, English & Chinese A Language & Literature Paper 1, History Paper 2, Economics Paper 1, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics AA, Mathematics AI and Business Management. Each is built on official past papers and official marking criteria; accuracy validation is staged, with English writing benchmarked against the HKEAA public exemplar ladder, six IB structured papers passing a marking-scheme fidelity check, and other subjects being validated.

Free for teachers?

Free for individual teachers: try it, mark your own classes, and share it with your school. For a school-wide licence (all teachers, no fair-use cap), email david@criteva.com or fill in the quotation form.

School standards required?

No. School marking standards are optional. Without them, marking follows the official criteria; upload them (PDF, Word or photo) and wherever they differ from the official criteria, your school’s version takes precedence.

Accuracy validation?

Marking is strictly criterion-referenced, item by item, with an evidence quote and a confidence value for every mark; uncertain scripts are collected into a review queue for you. Accuracy validation is staged: English writing is benchmarked against the HKEAA public exemplar ladder and closely matches the official levels; six IB structured papers pass a marking-scheme fidelity check (verified against official answers); other subjects are marked to the official criteria and are being validated. The teacher is always the final decision-maker.

Fair-use limits?

So that every teacher can get through, the free tier has a fair-use guideline of about 50 PDFs per IP per day and 50 pages per PDF (estimated from live usage, not a strict cap). A typical class of 30–40 scripts fits comfortably within a day. School batch licences are exempt.

Student script privacy?

To mark, page images/text are processed by Microsoft Azure OpenAI (Microsoft's enterprise service). Papers, marking standards and student scripts are never sold and never used to train any public model, and are handled under the Hong Kong Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. No login or account is needed; cached transcripts and marks are auto-deleted, typically within 24 hours.

School LMS integration?

LMS integration is to be introduced to the public soon: importing class rosters and assignments, and syncing grades back with one click. For now you can export to Excel/CSV and import into your existing school system.

Start with one class of scripts.

Criteria built in, no setup. Marked by the official criteria on the spot; the result is yours to decide. Free for individual teachers.
